how artists are represented

How artists are represented in my chosen genre
in my chosen genre of indie, it's not very often you see women being sexualised like the common stereotype, unless they are part of the band. it isn't very often you see women in indie music videos at all as the majority of indie bands are male which could arguably be an issue in itself - men dominate the indie genre. even the male artists are not sexualised as i feel that indie doesn't try to create a male gaze but is all about the band and the music itself. However, the men often exhibit traits of hegemonic masculinity with regard to;

  • Agression
  • Dominance
  • Physical appearance and physique
Despite this though it could be argued that they often try and challenge some stereotypical traits by incorporating the 'alternative'. Rebelling against the mainstream media messages.

In a lot of music videos of my chosen genre there isn't really a narrative, only shots of the band playing at concerts of even just in a random location, also there are many music videos are almost like a vlog as they record their fellow band members - an element of narrative -  a great example of this would be 'catfish and the bottleman'.

Catfish and the Bottlemen- Seven
The killers- Mr. Brightside
 Unlike the first music video 'The killers' music video looks as though it has a narrative but despite this it still views the band playing throughout.
